Report from the Vice President for Programs

Greetings to all as we start a fresh school year journey! It seems that every year our role as educators becomes more important and increasingly complex. This is why we must continue to band together for inspiration, support, and strength.

In that spirit, I would like to thank everyone who has donated books to our current Literacy Project. The Winegard School's library is struggling to build resources for its students, who are mainly from low-income backgrounds. As the school year begins, it is not too late to help out! Simply use the link at the left to get to the Winegard School's book "wish list" and place an order. Walden PDK bookplates will be place in each book to acknowledge our efforts. The prices are extremely reasonable, and there is so much need... Please help!

Upcoming programs are in the "work-in-progress" stage, but for our first one of the school year, Andre wisely suggested collaborating on what we can all do as educators to authentically respond to disasters such as the London bombings and of course the Gulf Coast hurricane. Let's come together with ideas for dealing with these realities in our classrooms. What is appropriate, and at what age levels? What are the boundaries we should not cross as teachers—or the ones we need to cross and never do? What is needed that we can give? What has already proven successful?

Our missing-in-action presenter from a couple of meetings ago, Dr. Janice Lake-Betts, is anxious to make that up to us! She would like to be involved in a future meeting focusing on cross-curricular teaching for getting in the rich "extras" that "teaching-to-the-test" leaves out. More info. to follow! (Janice's father-in-law passed away during the course of that winter meeting. Her whole family was in Maine without Internet access, so she missed my pleas to contact us until it was too late.)

Ideas for future programs are always welcome, so please share ideas as they arise!

Report from the Vice President for Membership

Dear Friends,

I am happy to report that the number of requests for membership has not slowed down during the summer months. I would like to take this opportunity then, and as Vice-President for Membership of our organization, I would like to extend the warmest welcome to the newest of our members. It is my sincere wish that you find within our group support, guidance and reflection of your own professional interests and pursuits. Welcome to Phi Delta Kappa.

Please visit us regularly at: http://waldenpdk.org/index.html

During the last year or so, we have been tossing the idea of expanding on our professional, educational support and activities by providing a publishing forum for our members. I still like the idea but I think that we need to hush out the logistics of how this could be done. Maybe that could be one of the topics for our fall meeting?

Finally, if you have any ideas about how to attract new members and how to make our membership experience more rewarding, please do not hesitate to contact me at: vp_membership@waldenpdk.org.

With best of regards,

Jarek Janio, vp_membership@waldenpdk.org

Report from the Vice President for Communications

Hello all,

I still haven't gotten the new email addresses figured out. I have put that task in my planner (why didn't I think to do that before?) so now I think I'll truly get to that in October. Also, I hope to work with Jarek, and finally get a system set up for getting new members in the chapter communications loop promptly.

Report from the Secretary

Marion welcomed officers to our meeting on May 19. She directed officers to follow the links to the website meeting center. Officers submitted reports as requested. Marion encouraged officers to review the budget. We need someone to step forward to be our Foundation Representative for this year.

Jennifer encouraged members to join our meeting and possibly win a door prize. Dr. Simon's presentation on social change was the focal point of our meeting. Dr. Simon shared the following announcement:

Walden is sponsoring a major conference on Social Change in mid October in Baltimore, MD. The conference will kick off the new journal of social change. Conference speakers from the Walden community and beyond will be sought. She encouraged all to spread the word regarding Walden™fs Journal for Social Change, which will be published in January, 2006. Walden PDK is encouraged to present papers at the conference and submit articles to the new journal.

The deadline for nominating a school library for this year's grant of books was Monday, May 23, midnight. [The Winegard School, nominated by Dr. Doris Sweeney, was selected as recipient of this year's award.]

We concluded our meeting with a vote to approve the budget and the election of officers.

Report from the Listserve Manager

Having received no additional or new information or direction the membership list remains in its current state. Accordingly, should there be any officer that is aware of anything that needs to be updated or added please remit that information to me or to Gay.

Inasmuch as the list most likely contains error (people move, email addresses and phone numbers change, etc., a reminder to the members to inform me of any such change(s) would be appreciated.

Report from the Treasurer

Marion, et al.:

Well, I am sending this from my Diversity Conference in Birmingham, AL. Whoever said that everything gets done by the same people is right!

Last year at this time we were recovering from Hurricane Ivan -- NOW, it's Hurricane Katrina. There are still many in our area who do not have electricity and we shut our college down for three days, then adjusted our Fall schedule so that classes meet onlyMonday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday.

I am way behind on my administrative duties owing to Katrina and am scrambling to get back up to speed. When I get back home I will put together the Treasurer's Report.Don't worry, we're all right, though.

As for the scholarship, I have scratched something out, but want to run it by others first.

By the way, as if my life were not full enough, my excellent wife, Elizabeth, told me just as the Katrina was about to visit us that we're going to blessed with another Ogden spawn! Due in April! That will be NINE! Well, at least the school system here in Demopolis won't have to worry about declining enrollment!

Anyhow, the devastation to this entire area is VAST. Most of you only see New Orleans because of the media, but lower Alabama, the bottom half of Mississippi, and upwards to about 175 miles looks like the photos after Mt. St. Helen's erupted a few years ago! I have NEVER seen anything like it! And I grfew up in Miami, FL, and lived through Andrew!!

All over the South we are taking in evacuees and they are in the 1,000's! The school systems in Louisiana and Mississippi, along with Mobile are entertaining the idea of cancelling the entire year!

At the same time, I am tired of the blame game! The real problem started with the Mayor of New Orelans who did not believe they would be hit. It all went down hill from there!

Anyhow, I am now catching up on my emails. Talk to y'all later.

Gay, testingHello to all. Here in northern California the Fall weather is so splendid, it is hard to spend any time at all at my computer. But we have some important things to accomplish with this meeting,so let's make the most of it.
Andre ElliottGreetings from Japan. This weekend, we expect a typhoon to reach our area. Typhoons are commonplace in Japan. Nevertheless, all is well with my family. I look forward to our deliberations. I visited Amazon.com and donated books to the Winegard school library in Florida. Donating a book is exemplary of a key PDK tenet, service. The Simon/Poppenhagen Scholarship is another exemplar of the PDK tenets. For me, Dr. Simon and Dr. Poppenhagen personified research, service and leadership. Our scholarship to honor Walden PDK's best, also honors PDK's longstanding tradition to recognize outstanding service. Did you know that we will, in just a few years, celebrate our 10th year as the only cyberspace PDK chapter ever? We have many people to thank for our longevity. We arose on the shoulders of a few pioneering Walden students. We are still rising with our current leadership team. Thank you. Thank you all.
Andre ElliottI was remiss, as I reflected on my previous comments. I should have acknowledged Walden University's leadership, faculty members, and students along with visionary PDK leaders who together constructed the foundation for our cyberspace chapter. On another note, Arthur, thanks for providing an account of what is happening in lower Alabama and other areas outside of New Orleans. The media certainly is not painting a broad view of the devastation. I look forward to reading your current thoughts regarding our scholarship.
Andre ElliottI will be away from the computer for a few days attending a music curriculum professional development meeting. PDK International is having a live discussion on Thursday, 8:00 a.m. this week. Visit www.pdkintl.org for more details.
JennyI agree with Jarek that the topic of how to make publication opportunities a reality is important to figure out. It will be great for those of us taking EDUC 8468 in which we have to prepare a publish-able article!
JarekI think we can only benefit from professional support and academic expertise shared within our group. This alone, may help us attract and retain new members. It's good to see you all here. Best ... Jarek
Andre ElliottMarion sent me the link to reach this communication space. Marion has always been responsive and caring through the years. I think this is our greatest asset. Jarek spoke of the professional support and academic expertise shared within our group. Our leadership, expertise, and service orientation will ensure that we are an organization worth joining. I remain confident that our opportunities will provide pathways to a promising cyberspace future.
October 11, 2005Meeting adjourned by the President, and discussion closed.
