Report from the Vice President for Programs
Our May program has two components: First, our annual “Literacy Project"”. It is time to nominate your favorite school library to receive our chapter's support in the form of book donations and a $300 cash grant. You will find a link to the school nomination form at the left. View the form to see what information is required for the nomination, and then return to complete the form and submit it by midnight, Monday, May 23rd. Before the close of this meeting, we will vote to select one of the nominated libraries.
Second, we will address a topic that cuts through all others for us as educators and, particularly for us as Walden PDK educators: ways to affect positive social change in our own current experience. Inspired by Dr. Simon's wonderful presentation on this critical part of our professional endeavors, we will be able to construct strategies for application in our individual circumstances. Some colleagues and I recently initiated a community program to address violence in the school and neighborhoods, and to help students and families take a pro-active approach to the problems rather than be victimized. This experience will hopefully contribute to a multifaceted discussion providing some real answers to the question "How do I affect positive social change?".
On another note, I would like to thank and congratulate members who have proudly supported our own Walden Cyberspace PDK chapter by purchasing and sporting their PDK badges for the world to see! [Click here for more info on these badges.] This is an awesome collection of educators, and we hope to hear from everyone during our May gathering.

Report from the Vice President for Membership
Members are out there!!!
I have been receiving a steady flow of Requests for Information rounded to about 3 to 5 per week. The number of requests seems to be higher around Walden‚s special events. We may want to go back to the discussion of who is going to be representing PDK at the Walden Summer Session this year. It certainly would be a great idea to have us represented.
To the best of my knowledge our dues are not going anywhere: they are at $95.00 per year to join. From our discussions in recent months I gather that dues should not be an inhibition for the new members to join. I do appreciate the input of those who contributed to the fiscal discussion. Considering that our share of the dues is not as high as we would like it to be, we may have to discuss the raise before the end of this calendar year.
I certainly applaud the idea presented by Dr. Simon that we be strongly present at the Baltimore Conference. As a group of scholars, we could also consider a paper to the newly emerging journal on Social Change. That would be the best advertising for our group.
Otherwise, summer seems to be right around the corner with all the hassles and joys of travel. I wish you all the best of times.

Report from the Secretary
Sometimes I wonder what position I hold in our PDK chapter. I think I am currently the secretary. As one of the founding members, I always feel flexible in wearing many hats. Our fine president, Marion Carpenter, has actually given my report as I see it. She sent a collection of old and new business items. I have made a folder to collect all communications regarding the May meeting. Therefore, I can summarize our discussions and communications concisely for our next meeting.
I have served the Tokyo PDK chapter for two years. Next year, there will be a new president. I will have more time for our Walden chapter. Looking fowarding to achieving the goals regarding membership, the Simon/Poppenhagen Scholarship, reduced membership dues and more.
