Gay Wiseman, with Greg Williams as Webmaster-Elect

These are intended to be two distinct positions but we have not been able to fill both positions with suitably capable individuals in the past. The Communications Director is intended to oversee and coordinate the official channels of communication hosted by the chapter: the website, the newsletter, the email accounts for members, and the email listserve. The webmaster is responsible specifically for the website. These positions require technical expertise. Webmaster-Elect will take on Webmaster duties gradually through June 2007, and take over as webmaster through June 2008. Gay Wiseman will continue as Communications Director through June 2008.

Note about chapter advisors: Our chapter has two advisors; one is this Walden Faculty Liason, an elected position. The other is the immediate past President. If Marion Carpenter continues on as President, one of our previous presidents, Dr. Charles Smith, will remain in this advisory role. Our immediate past President, Gay Wiseman, fills another officer position at this time. If/when a new President is selected, Marion Carpenter will automatically assume the second advior position.

Brief description of the general type(s) of books most needed:
We're in need of quality children's literature in the area of E (everyone/easy), F (fiction/chapter books) and reference materials as many of our books predate 1990.

Brief description of the general type(s) of books most needed:
Our School Library needs many types of books: reference materials, Spanish Language books, and books for beginning readers. A top priority is to provide books for the new pre-school program which began this year.
Other pertinent information about this library's need for our support:
Our School Library has been fortunate to receive funds from our general budget, but this does not begin to cover the numerous materials that are necessary to support our curriculum.

Thank you very much for your consideration of our grant request.

Name of school (and district, if applicable):

Glenwood School, Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation

Nominated by:
John L Craddock

Number of students served (approximate):
100
Brief description of the socio-economic character of the school community:
Glenwood is a very old, poor school in the CBD of Evansville. Its entire student base is "special needs" developmentally challenged, poor and virtually entirely minority, mainly African American. It is seen as the "school of last resort" for those who can not make it in a traditional school. At present there is no real library and even textbooks if available are recycled and old. I have seldom seen a school so poor or teachers so passionately committed to making do with whatever they can scrimp together. At present they buy their own supplies and books just to be able to teach. I am awed at their commitment. The school district, claiming underfunding, is ignoring this special needs school in favor of the more affluent ones. It's a source of pain to many here.
Brief description of the general type(s) of books most needed:
The "Young Hoosier Reading List" covers all the books needed. However, if selected, the school requests "packs" of books (10 of 1 kind) so that small reading groups can be formed.
Other pertinent information about this library's need for our support:
I have made the decision that even if the school is not selected, I will father a program personally and have alredy made the commitment to Mrs Hooker/Riggs. I can not stand by and see this continue. These kids want to learn and grow and that merits as much support as can be raised.

Name of school (and district, if applicable):

Westwood Elementary School
Broken Arrow Public Schools

Nominated by:
Candace Stine

Number of students served (approximate):
480
Brief description of the socio-economic character of the school community:
This is a title I school that serves as a regional ELL center. The socio-economic nature of this school ranges from some middle income families to mostly low income families.
Brief description of the general type(s) of books most needed:
Transition books that would help ELL students (predominately hispanic) and accelerated reader books.
Other pertinent information about this library's need for our support:
Accelerated reading is a huge part of the literacy program. Given the volume of books needed to fill the students various levels and needs it is hard with school funds to purchase new titles to keep up with the demand of new literature.
