Journal Publication Discussion

The publication of a scholarly journal has been a dream of the chapter since it's earliest days as a "club", and the project has been gaining momentum recently and is on the cusp of actualization. Here are relevant excerpts from recent discussion among officers on the officers' email list. It is time to bring the whole chapter in on this discussion!

[From Jarek Janio, June 6, 2006]

Hello Marion,

Thanks to your support, I believe that the possibility of the journal at our
Chapter has come closer to becoming a reality. I would like to propose this
as an item for a discussion during our Spring Meeting.

After having discussed the idea over the last few months, with some of you,
I would like to propose that the Journal be devoted to work by new scholars
still in Walden Program. Thanks to Dr. Simon's suggestions, it seems like
the best targeted audience would be within education department, and I just
hope we can discuss the issue further with other officers. We should discuss
and agree on the depth and scope of the project.

Together with Dr. Simon, we have prepared a short letter that should
eventually be sent to Dr. Yob with question for her approval. Please see
attached and let's share thoughts, suggestions and insights.

Best of regards,

Jarek

Jarek, this is wonderful. Your well-conceived proposal merits significant discussion.

This is fantastic, Jarek. Let's get to it during the meeting.

[From Marion Carpenter, June 8, 2006]

This is fantastic! This is the most progress we have seen, and I greatly appreciate Jarek & Dr. Simon working together to produce this. The letter is excellent, & I believe that Dr. Yob will be pleased and excited, as we are.

The idea to use new scholars is a good start, but at some time I'd like to see members who have some interesting information be able to share even a brief summary of important new information, also. The sharing of these ideas will enhance our own learning and benefit students everywhere. I can foresee PDK Intl providing a link on their map to our Journal page for other educators throughout the world to share.

It would be ideal to have an abstract of the Application part of the KAM, as you suggested, and if possible, Gay or Gregg could have a place on our site for them to be read and then a place for response, so discussion could be carried out. Jarek, this will fulfill your dream for a place of discussion, as you & I have spoken about earlier. Exciting, isn't it? The amount of material will determine the depth into which they may go, I believe, and has to be determined by Gay & Gregg, as they know what our site will handle. There could also be a "Connection" button to allow people to email the author for further in depth information.

To begin with, we might start out with one or two articles per month - or is this too much, G&G? Perhaps a spotlight on the new in greater depth, with an abstract on a past KAM, also. This I an not yet sure about - some KAMs are so awesome that one will yearn for more information, whether new or old. Dr. Yob may be able to act as a screener for us, with advisors sending her names of exceptional work to be considered for publishing. Members of our chapter should be given first opportunity, with consideration given to others. This will also fulfill our earlier goal of being the chapter doing the most research, as a sideline plus.

Wonderfully exciting, and well done, my friends, well done!!! I look forward to hearing from any other officers. Please do add a summary of this information on the board, but we'd best contact Dr. Yob before this goes public, as we are using her name. I will be glad to do so, or perhaps Dr. Simon would like the honor?

Marion

[From Marilyn Simon, June 8, 2006]

If Dr. Yob gives us a thumbs up, Let's put out a call to all our members for articles. I would be pleased to be a reader for the articles. We can also ask our members, who have had some journal experience, to be readers as well. Ideally, it would be nice to start with around 10 articles, but we can see how many quality responses we get.

Let's move forward!

[Marion Carpenter, June 8, 2006]

Wow! Ten articles? You are indeed ambitious, but why not? We do need to
hear from Gay, though, on her time to type it all in.

Marion

[From Marilyn Simon, June 8, 2006]

Hopefully we will just need to cut and paste. We can be very specific on how
we want the articles submitted.

[Gay Wiseman, June 10, 2006]

Good point Marilyn. We could provide a style guide for submissions that will make it as easy as possible to post them online, and that will assure a certain level of consistency in presentation.

I don't think we've yet had anyone actually say they'll serve as editor for this project yet though, have we? Someone will have to jump for this role before we can move forward. Perhaps one of our new recruits would be interested in this?

Gay

[From Marilyn Simon, June 8, 2006]

I would like to nominate Jarek for the position of editor in chief and I would like to serve as a managing editor.

Best, Marilyn

[Andre Elliott, June 10, 2006]

I support Jarek and Dr. Simon as editors of the journal.

Andre

[Arthur Ogden, June 10, 2006]

Great idea! Jarek is a solid choice and with you to back him up we have a good staff. This could develop into a refereed journal, and that is exciting!

Arthur

[Marion Carpenter, June 10, 2006]

Hooray! This sounds super! It has been Jarek's baby anyway, and he does deserve to work on it. Dr. Simon, you are the cream on top! Thank you both!!

Marion

[Jennifer Pullman, June 10, 2006]

What a resource this journal will be for anyone who takes EDUC 8468, where the focus is on understanding the publication process and preparing one's pilot study for publication! This is so exciting, and I agree that Jarek is the obvious choice for editor in chief. How wonderful that Marilyn can play such a major role too!

Jenny

[Jarek Janio, June 11, 2006]

Thanks for the honor. I will be more than happy to do this. I really appreciate the warm support from all of you.

Warm regards,

Jarek
