Welcome!
January 5, 2006
Happy New Year! Greetings to you all! It is so neat to see the sign-ins on the greeting page & to see what is happening in your corner of the world! Our diversity is amazing. Our program is going to be a hands-on, useful item. In addition to the treasure chest of freebies (on the New Year's party page), our program will be one of sharing other web resources with each other, which we have found particularly useful - very valuable, indeed!
In looking back at the past, I found the Goals pagein the Chapter Information section of this site. It was created and uploaded in April 2001, in preparation for our chapter's installation. We haven't taken a look at chapter goals since then, and we obviously need to update them. But it is great to look back on the goals that chapter leaders were making at that time, to see our own progress.
GOAL 1: Our Chapter will have the most research: With so many in Walden, all are doing research. We should hit that one right on! Most Service - we are always doing something. I don't know if it is measureable, as we probably can't find out about the other chapters. Leadership: Probably not measureable.
GOAL 2: Best Website: We have won the best website already - at least once,
maybe twice. Any of you remember?GOAL 3: Biggest Chapter: We are nearly the biggest chapter now at 115 members - I'll check in with International. If we aren't, we may reach this goal sooner than anybody thinks!!
GOAL 4: A leader uniting educators - we do that in our jobs, as we learn & educate others. However, I'm not sure how measurable that is.
It still points up to the fact that you are the most educated, kind in service, fastest growing group anywhere in the world of PDK! I'm so happy to have all of you here. Congratulations to you all, and may your success continue in all areas of your lives! On to this promising New Year!!
Old Business:
- In response to need of the hurricane evacuees, donations were made to Camp Gruber, OK, home of over 2000 evacuees, to their pre-school program in the honor of Jennifer's mother-in-law, Mary, who asked on her death bed that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Katrina evacuees. A report of this can be found here.
- We participated in International's Walk for Education, with all money going to International's program to help the evacuees.
- Literacy Project: The donation of books to Winegard School in FL has been concluded, and we look forward to the new one - it could be your school. Please feel free to enter again if you have not won recently. You still have a chance to help your students and your school. More on this from Jennifer.
- The lost 15 newest members from the Summer Session of 2005 are finally found and we welcome you!!
- Jarek, our Membership Vice President, has discussed the idea of publishing for you, the members of Cyberspace PDK. It would make you look very good indeed to have your resume state that you have been published on a professional PDK site. He states, "During the last year or so, we have been tossing around the idea of expanding on our professional, educational support and activities by providing a publishing forum for our members. I still like the idea but I think that we need to hash out the logistics of how this could be done." Please use this form to contact Jarek and request more information. Also, give him your ideas, as this is still in planning stages.
New Business:
- Connie McCoy of PDK Int'l will be discussing with the scholarship committee ways to help us get the program appropriately/legally set up. Arthur Ogden, treasurer & head of the committee, will share further info.
- Our chapter is listed as being in Florida, which it is technically (for International's administrative and organizational purposes) but that makes it hard for potential members to find us as a cyberspace chapter that operates outside of any physical location. I have requested that PDK's IT desk put us as a separate, obviously visible link. They have agreed and will work on it after the holidays.
- We would like to set up for each of our members a waldenpdk.org email address.
- Dr. Marilyn Simon, our Walden advisor, has authored a new book,
entitled:
DISSERTATION AND SCHOLARLY RESEARCH: RECIPES FOR SUCCESS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO START AND COMPLETE YOUR DISSERTATION, THESIS, OR FORMAL RESEARCH PROJECT
You can see a picture of the book/CD set on our home page. You can get in line to borrow it from our new lending library (soon) or purchase it yourself here. Congratulations to Dr. Simon! - Gay Wiseman, our Director of Communications, has proposed the idea of a small chapter lending library, to make available some special resources to our members, starting with Marilyn's new book! More information on this from Gay during this meeting.
- A free subscription to the Kappan has been sent to Willette Horne-Barnes,
Assistant Principal of Yokosuka Middle School, Japan. One more free
subscription is available & should be used. Does anybody want to nominate
someone from their school? Please let me know, & I will get it sent to
them.
As always, thank you for being here! You are appreciated!
Thank you!!
