Report from the Vice President for Programs

Happy, Healthy, Prosperous 2007 to One and All!

Our Journal of Educational Practice for Social Change is one of those realities, and it is growing each month. It was satisfying to present it formally to our membership at the Fall meeting, and celebrate together.

We also celebrated West Cape May School receiving the Literacy Project award. Actually, NOW is the ideal time to add a book or two to the school's library, with all the Amazon sales in effect! Thank you for so generously contributing to this far-reaching cause, and please continue to do so...the prices are so modest, and many are discounted even further right now! In the Amazon home page, click on Wish List and enter “library@wcm.capemayschools.com”.  Then just select what you will contribute and proceed as usual checking out. We can continue to make a difference for students in this needy and wonderful school.

Members joined in a high-spirited discussion about the results of the annual PDK Poll. Many implications for our own lives and the lives of our students emerged in the report that was the focus of our session.

Our door prizes were warmly received by Steve Canipe and Kate Swetnam. Kate elected to share the happiness with homeless families by in turn donating her holiday centerpiece to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. The wonderful staff and families there were moved by her thoughtfulness and enjoyed a much jollier season thanks to her contribution.

We are honored and thrilled to be overtaken, in the best sense, by exceptionally dynamic and fascinating new officers in the upcoming year! My own officer-elect for Programs, Bianca Elliot, will generously host our New Year's Eve Program by sharing her amazing experiences in "Education Around the World".

With a warm welcome to all,

Jenny

Report from the Vice President for Membership

Membership Report for 2006

In order to maximize our chapter's mission we need to increase our membership, and as the new Vice President of Membership I have taken up that goal and I am happy to report that I am presently in conversation with Amy S. Kemp, Director of Membership of Phi Delta Kappa International, with the goal of our discussions to coordinate our membership drives with International to increase our depth and potential for seeking out new members.

Looking to expand our membership can come in a lot of forms. I am looking into how we can further our membership goals through collaboration and partnership with other sectors including government, non profit, education, health, technology, and business, to name a few, as all sectors would be interested in sound public and international education research and policy and would also, in my view, be interested in joining a professional educational organization and our unique chapter. Ideas come from all of you so please communicate to me as this wonderful idea from  Andre to advance our chapter through projects to assist other chapters. All work done by our chapter is good public relations for us and likely to attract more members that will want to become a part of a proactive chapter that is accessible from anywhere in the world. Being a cyberspace chapter is a major advantage I plan to take advantage of. For more information on how to follow up with your project ideas, go to http://www.pdkintl.org/forms/form112.pdf, or contact myself or Andre.

Without hardly any effort from me and a lot of effort at a recent residency of Walden University Walden University Cyberspace Chapter have obtained new interest and new members. Our goal is to have a membership drive at all upcoming Walden University residency's.

Each month since I took over in September 2006, I have received approximately 4-5 requests for membership information. Good news is that we are getting interest and attention, and to help sustain this momemtum we are looking to build on our web site a new Frequently Asked Questions Page concerning becoming a member, and how to participate once a member has joined. These and other questions are being looked into by myself, Greg and Jarek.

Membership Advisory Committee  has committed to meeting bi-monthly to discuss best practices to be carried out at the local chapter level. results are now available online athttp://www.pdkintl.org/chapters/mbrcom.htm. See the new initiatives, ideas, and program-starters that this group discusses monthly. Ideas from the November conference call were pitched by Mark Engelhardt, Region D CML and Membership VP for chapter 0178; and by Andre Elliott, Region A CML.

Career Changers—Graduate Student Membership Rates: Some confusion has arisen relative to graduate student membership options. To help elaborate on the distinction a graduate student must have to apply for membership at 1⁄2 dues, our membership team is revising the associate member application to include a “Career Changer” option. These new forms will be available in early January .   If you are returning to   university/college campus for the purpose of acquiring your teaching license for the first time in your career, you are eligible for membership in PDK at 1⁄2 the professional dues rate. To take advantage of this offer and simultaneously join the local chapter, please call the international PDK office at 800/766-1156 and ask for the membership team. Please indicate when calling that you have received this e-mail offer from PDK Chapter #1586. We would love to have you join us.

Be reminded that this 1⁄2 dues membership offer will be extended to the career changers for as long as they remain students.

Flyers are available for you to pass out at your meetings, schools, laundromats and any other places where you think they would attact the students and professionals we are looking for to increase membership. For more information please contact me directly. Happy New Year, and I look forward taking my role as your new VP of Membership to new heights.

With warmest regards,

David Kenneth Waldman

Report from our PDK Foundation Representative

Dear Friends,

I hope the Holiday has been peaceful and joyous for everyone. I would like to say that the raffle was very successful we have raised $104.00 and we have some donations from the Spoken word event that occured on Dec 8th at Luella Middle School it was a student run event that was implemented to enhance literacy through poetry and storytelling. I should have a final tally by the end of next week and will be mailing that check out to Dr. Arthur. I do plan to raffle off on a monthly basis a basket of melaleuca products which will hopefully increase the participation inthe fundraiser as well as our membership.

On a personal note I have been forced to slow down a bit because I was physically doing too much especialy concerning being the project director for my grant. I was encouraged by my physician to take some time off this past 2 weeks and I did. I do believe the recharge helped.

Happy Holidays again and good health.

Report from the Historian

The following is offered for your consideration:

I am very pleased with this conversation regarding awards. We are approaching our tenth  year. I can still see the bright, warm day in Bloomington, Indiana when two Walden students casually walked on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington and contemplated the first cyberspace chapter in PDK's history. I believe that Dr. Simon may be the only active member remaining who continues in great service to our chapter and was present during the critical weeks of our inchoation. Is there another member among us who was present during the summer of 1997? As we speak of awards, we have many individuals who have not been adequately honored. Therefore, as founding president and current historian, I present what I hope will become our chapter's awards program. Based on my research of PDK's awards suggestions, I have attached two documents for your consideration. The first contains a list of possible awards. The second contains a sample letter announcing an award.! The letter announcing the award is simply an example. The name of the award can be whatever we choose. Most awards should not cost the chapter a penny.

In the spirit of the great American musician, James Brown, who was known to tell an announcer the words to use to introduce James Brown, Walden PDK should establish a Hall of Fame. I recommend that all members in our chapter who receive a service key be admitted to this hall of fame. Certainly, we should adhere to strict guidelines to determine who receives a service key award. There are many awards that we can give each yea to deserving members and officers. However, a service key award should be given to a member who has a sustained superior performance in our chapter and meets the criteria established by PDK international.

Dr. Simon and David, thanks for the service key suggestion. I would like the officers to consider establishing a Hall of Fame for our chapter as the hallmark of our awards program. By the way, the annual Simon/Poppenhagen scholarship should be added to the list of awards. Please view the attached documents.

Again, the above is offered for your discussion and consideration. We have many individuals to thank for our longevity! The awards program would be a great accomplishment for our chapter. Let's get started.

David Kenneth WaldmanWelcome members and Happy New Year, 2007! I look forward when I am in contact with any of you at our PDK Walden University Chapter concerning membership. The reason is that I admire that each of you are professionals or students working to improve the quality of education, my passion, my life's work. Let me respectfully invite you to enjoy the coming of 2007 and challenge you to become involved, contribute, join committees and in return let the chapter know how we can support you, get involved, contribute so that our common mission meets all of your needs. Happy New Year, Be safe.
Gay WisemanI am putting in a paragraph break, as described in the yellow box above, to make this post easier to read.

Now I am trying out the bold and italic tags.

Jennifer K. PullmanHappy New Year! I am honored to be able to spend some of my celebration of this transitional few hours between two different years with such an exciting group of people! Here's to a wonderful year ahead for our chapter and for every member and their loved ones. Jenny
Randy FreemanI am a new member, having joined following the Indiana University Summer Residency. I missed my first opportunity due to family business (being a 51-year-old father with 4 young daughters - a 9-year-old and 6-year-old triplets -keeps me busy. I live in Southern California, teaching kindergarten with 31 students. I hope that I will be able to contribute in some way for this chapter, I just don't know what yet. Give me some ideas.
Marion CarpenterHappy New Year, everybody! It's been a very grey day and our large rainfall may ice over, creating a true winter wonderland - beautiful, but it makes one wonder about even getting out of the house. That makes it a super time to visit with all of you. The high energy & true delight from the officers in their zeal to help others is outstanding - it is truly you, the members, who make this the exceptional chapter that it is. Please take a few minutes to respond to the officers, especially if you have further questions or are interested in helping on some committee.
The below comments are ideas for acknowledging our members and would enjoy your comments.

Randy Hello and welcome. It has been my practice for my non governmental organization to combine volunteers talents, experience and passion. So my idea would to suggest what is it that you want to do but up till now did could not do alone as the resources, people and team needed was not available. Then you have found your contribution to our chapter. Following your passion will get you where you want to contribute.

I would like to respectfully add that there is added a category that includes commendation or some recognition of as many of our members and to encourage them to become active. There are not many that reach the heights or aspire to the service of a Academy Award, a Pulitzer, a Nobel Prize, a Service Key Award as they represent the highest contributions and excellence.

However, there are many that do work that is a part of the process and contribute with time and input, small steps that move the organization forward, people that motivate, always part of a team and volunteer and while I agree to keep and maintain the highest standards, there should be included numerous ways to acknowledge service.

For example, for starting a new fundraising idea and marketing program at a residency. For one year service, three years, five, ten, 15, 20 years etc so everyone will get a certificate at least if they remain a member for one year. There are many that want to get involved and the more we say thank you at the small stages of involvement cumulatively they add up to continued service and lots of people in the background quietly contributing small things all the time get acknowledged.

Well done Andre and we need to have a set of criteria and definition of what is innovation, leadership, service and research to education means. That can be added and a committee selected to go over the applications.

I also think past members are eligible for Hall of Fame if they are no longer with the Chapter or even no longer living to honor their work.

Regards David

Theran MuglestonA New Year has begun, but sometimes it is worthwhile to look at the past to see where we have been.

Andre has noted the first little gathering that took place in Teter Hall. From that meeting we find the Chapter as it exists today.

The Chapter has undergone growth pains, there have been many struggles, but the reason it has been successful is because of a few very dedicated individuals. I won't try to name them, because I am sure I would leave out someone and I would not want to hurt anyones feelings. They know who they are.

As I mentioned, sometimes it is good to look back and see where things began, to recognize the struggle, and then it is easier to appreciate where you are. However, and nothwithstanding, progress and accompanying joy, another reason to survey the Chapter's growth, is to recognize and realize that there is much yet to accomplish.

I firmly believe that the Chapter can grow, accomplish more, and become a mighty force for improvement, change, and success on a personal level as well as a Chapter level, if the members really want to do this.

It is my hope that on this New Year's day 2007, we recommit ourselves to "our" chapter, and if each of us individually does just a little bit, the chapter can accomplish significant things. So, among the various resolutions we make today, may one of them be, to do something for the chapter this year. Maybe it will be inviting someone to join us, maybe to participate in a fund raiser, maybe to join in the Literacy project, maybe to simply give the website address to others.

May each and everyone one of you have a marvelous 2007, Happy New Year.

GayTheran! So glad to "see" you! Best wishes to you also, for a meaningful and productive 2007.
JarekHappy New Year Everyone. I'm looking forward to working with all of you in 2007! It looks like our agendas are filled with activties from fundraising, through Literacy Project, to the Journal of Educational Practice for Social Change. Please do have a look: http://jepsc.org/. I also would like to extend the warmest welcome to David as our newest VP for Membership. I am really glad to be a part of such exciting group. New Year's Cheers to all of us. Jarek
Sue HutchinsonHappy New Year Everyone!

Things in Atlanta were gloomy and rainy on New Year's Eve, but the sun came out on January 1 to brighten up the prospects for 2007!

Sue

Andre ElliottThis year, our chapter will begin to piece together the portrait of our first ten years. We have many milestones. Here is one for the new year. On July 23, 1999, 10:08 a.m., Randy Elmore, PDK District 7 Representative, sent a congratulatory email message to Walden PDK announcing "Your petition to move the Walden PDK Club to full chapter status was accepted by the PDK International Board at this hour. You are all pioneers, exploring and opening pathways to the future." Randy, thanks for staying the course. Theran, thanks for your leadership as a past officer and ongoing faith in our future.
Karine ClayHi Everyone Happy New Year, I am soooo happy to see everyone starting the new year running of with a head start on making our chapter the best in PDK internationals history. I have a total of $204.00 to mail to out esteem Treasurer in thenext couple of weeks. The district financial officer is a little behind and he had to cut me the final chack to mail out. I am happ yo say that the individual who won the raffle and I be speaking with her later on this week concerning her desire to join the fundriser if not the chapter eventhough I will encourage both in our conversation (smile). I will be starting the next raffle in february for valentines and it will be the December and January orders that will be used to make baskets. We will also use some of the melaleuca produsts for the door prizes in this winter meeting. I want to remind everyone to please consider visiting the site on the fundraiser with Melaleuca. The benefits of using the nontoxic and environmental safe products are numerous and long lasting. All questions and concern are answer at the fundraiser link or you can email me personal I welcome any and all questions. Great to talk with you alll and I am truly looking forward to this year.
Karine ClaySorry about all the typing errors everyone my vision is a little off this week please forgive me I hit the submit button by mistake before I finished prooreading oops
Karine ClayGay could we place the links to the fundraiser from the last meeting in this one for easy access if it is possible? Believe me I know life in general is hectic and you are doing the job of many but I would really appreciate it. If not everyone can visit our last meeting to access the links as well.
GayYes, excellent idea Karine, I should have thought of that. I'll add it to the sidebar--probably sometime tomorrow (Sat the 6th).
Andre ElliottKarine, Is there any way for members of our chapter to buy products from you or others to support the scholarship? I assume the only expense would be shipping the products to the members. If they are willing to pay for the shipping expense, is this a possibility? It appears to me that this may increase sales. By the way, I think you are a breath of fresh air for our chapter. Truly, you have distinguished yourself as extraordinary. We are fortunate to have you as a Walden Kappan.
KarineHello Andre, Actually that is a great idea as far as improving sales of course the chapter receives more from actual membership but this is a great way for members to try the products and then decide if they would like to be members at a later date. I can order for them through the chapters membership. They can email the order and their address as well as payment method. I do not have a problem with doing this since I make all orders for the chapter online it is not an issue so yes I think this will be a great option to present to our members. So if there is anyone who would like to try out the products before making a commitment of membership please contact me and I will make the orders for you. You can visit the website www.melaleuca.com and decide which products you would like to order. All members will pay the discounted rate because the items will be purchased through the chapter membership. Thank you Andre I love it when great minds get together.
KarineOK everyone wish me Happy Birthday I turned 37 on January 6th oh god where has the time gone. I'm looking forward to the next decade they say life only gets better. I know definitely working with all of you has been an enrichment in my scholarly journey thank you.
MarionHappy Birthday, Karine! May you have many more, and may they be healthy and happy ones! Andre, that is a super idea! Thanks for your imput!
AndreOtanjoubi Omedeto! This is how happy birthday is expressed in Japanese. Congratulations. You are quite young and have a lifetime ahead of you. I will look at the products and place an order through you soon.
GayMore from Marion this morning-—her mother is gravely ill and her energies remain focused there. She still wants to post nominations for officers before we conclude this meeting, so that elections can proceed at our Spring meeting. This discussion board will remain open for the time being.
KarineFabulous everyone, All who have orders for January please email your orders, address and phone numbers so that I can call you to get the payment method so everything will be sent directly to you for easy convenience. I know I have been silent for a minute dealing with my own health surprises but I will honestly say that for my personality having a pity party is not my style. I dislike being idle so please help me get back my mental groove. I look forward to your orders in the next couple of days.
Dr. Charles SmithHappy New Year Members: Please allow me to convey my thanks and appreciation to the Walden PDK Chapter upon the planning of its 10 year celebration. Furthermore, I am indeed honored having served as President of the First Walden PDK Cyberspace Chapter in July of 1999. Our Chapter has made many progressive strides since that time. Our Founding President Dr. Elliott, Advisors Dr. Simon, Dr. Poppenhagen, current President Marion Carpenter and others, all contributed much to our growth and development. For this effort, we are to be commended. Membership will grow as long as we remain fully dedicated to the task of maintaining our mission statement and by accomplishing our PDK goals and objectives. My favorite quote is "let's move on with our progressive agenda." Again, I offer my heartfelt congratulations!
John CraddockHappy Decade Anniversary, members and Officers! Ah, I remember clearly that meeting site in Summer 1997, and the excitement at creating the first ever "Cyberspace Chapter" for PDK... I was a privelege to have been there then and I am humbled to be here now and see what all our efforts have led to. This is a wonderful group with masterful leaders and it's a privelege to be a part of it still. Happy New Year everyone, and thank you Andre, Dr. Smith, Theran, Marilyn, Marion, Gay, Karine and everyone I may have overlooked, for all you have done for our Chapter over the decade. John
