Minutes of the Business Meeting
January 24-28, 2001

1-2001 President Dr. Charles J. Smith, Sr., called the meeting to order. We followed the agenda which was presented by Charles and approved by the officers.

2-2001 In addition to 8 officers and 3 advisors, and many members, we welcomed several members from the Metro Atlanta PDK Chapter who joined us for our meeting.

3-2001 Dr. Dorothy Hicks presented the minutes of the last business meeting. Minutes were approved.

4-2001 Dr. Arthur Ogden presented the financial report. With a balance of $2658.30 on November 30, 2000, expenses of $76.53, deposits totaling $641.24, and interest of $3.29, the balance on hand 1/26/01 was $3226.30.

REPORTS
5-2001 Gay Wiseman, VP of Programs, will lead us in a program, "Online Elections; Problems and Solutions," at the end of our business meeting. She has it posted on the web: http://minnehaha.waldenu.edu/pdk/ The discussion will include the needs of national elections as well as the needs of our PDK Chapter elections. The reliability and the cost of on-line elections were discussed.

6-2001 Philip Rossomando, VP of Research, added several of our guests to our mailing list.

7-2001 Theran Mugleston, Newsletter Editor, reported that the Newsletter continues to be released about every other month. He indicated appreciation for considerable assistance from Gay Wiseman, who created the web page. Theran requests that we respond the the topic for discussion to be included in the next issue. That topic was included in the last Newsletter.

8-2001 Joyce Griffith-Butler, Foundation and Scholarship Representative, reminded the members that the deadline for the scholarship applications is January 31st. She requested volunteers to read the applications.

9-2001 Gay Wiseman reported that she has been working on the new website to prepare it for use in our meetings and programs. Discussion board capability is planned but not yet incorporated, and some upgrades to the chapter information section are also planned.

There was discussion about our use of the web. Andre Elliott recommended that we purchase our own space. Several members offered contributions toward the purchase of web space. Marilyn Simon suggested we investigate the Walden Institute site, which has many capabilities for virtual chat.

10-2001 Advisor Marion Carpenter reported that at the Savannah Conference our Chapter was presented a listing of the Walden Chapter Charter Members. She sought approval to plan a presentation of this beautiful framed chart to Dr. Poppenhagen for display in the Walden University Education Office. The Officers approved the plan. Dr. Smith may be able to make the presentation at summer session. Marion also noted that our membership list needs to be updated.

11-2001 Advisor Andre Elliott announced that he and Marion Carpenter will write a history of Walden Phi Delta Kappa. They welcome any ideas an perspectives on how best to approach this task.

He also reported that he is researching the idea of having t-shirts for our chapter to raise funds.

12-2001 Advisor Marilyn Simon announced the "Walden university Extraordinary Faculty Award" process and time line.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
13-2001 The third and final reading of the Walden University Phi Delta Kappa Cyberspace Chapter Budget took place. Members were urged to review the 2001 budget at http://minnehaha.waldenue.edu/pdk/ before voting.

Discussion followed. It was moved that we add a line item category for "Internet Communications Services," and allocate an amount of $240. for this year. This was approved.

It was also moved, seconded, and approved that we increase the scholarship amount to $200.

After a motion and a second, the budget was approved.

14-2001 Phil Rossomando was appointed to Chair the Walden University Phi Delta Kappa Awards Committee. Phil's appointment was approved by the officers and gracefully accepted by Phil. Dr. Doris Sweeney, Donna Dabney, Patricia Tennell, and Janice M. Shabe have also volunteered and been named to the Awards Committee.

15-2001 Dr. Charles Smith recommended to the Awards Committee, that Dr. Marilyn Simon, Andre Elliott, and Marion Carpenter receive the first Walden University Phi Delta Kappa Service Awards.

16-2001 John Craddock, founding treasurer, urged that we get our "long overdue" printed chapter shingles. Dr. Smith responded that "Dr. Sandi Gardner has designed a beautiful certificate for members. They will be mailed ASAP. Dr. Smith will also ask Marion Carpenter to have copies made of the Charter Certificate to distribute to all Charter members.

17-2001 Marion Carpenter responded to the request for a copy of the charter membership list, saying that it is a very large document, and asked whether a charter member certificate that Sandi Gardner is working on would suffice.

18-2001 Dr. Smith introduced Donna Dabney as the new Chapter Historian of Walden University PDK Cyberspace Chapter.

NEW BUSINESS
19-2001 After discussion, there was a recommendation and agreement among membership that our Chapter dues remain the same for the 2001-2001 fiscal year. The local chapter dues will remain at $25.00.

20-2001 Marilyn Simon suggested we might have badges made with our Cyberspace Chapter name on it. After several members responded positively, Marilyn will have them made and distributed. She will let us know the cost. It will be a fund raiser for our Chapter.

21-2001 Advisor Marilyn Simon also called our attention to the January issue of the Kappan which discusses the effect of standardized testing on education. She invited discussion from members as to whether our Chapter should "take a stand" in some way. It was decided that a letter would be written to the new national Secretary of Education, Dr. Rod Paige.

OTHER BUSINESS
22-2001 Andre Elliott nimated Dr. Marilyn Simon to receive the Distinguished Faculty Member Award presented by the Board of Directors. Through our list, several members wrote letters in support of Dr. Simon's nomination.

ADJOURNMENT
23-2001 the meeting was adjourned on Monday, January 29, 2001.
