At this year's conference in St. Louis, there was no provision at the conference hotel for members to get online to communicate with their their families, colleagues, and with their home chapter while at the conference, or to research topics and sites presented by conference speakers,. Andre and I walked to the nearest public library to find a place to get online! The hotel did offer a "business center" with limited internet access for a fee (exorbitant) but it was not adequate to serve the many attendees. We think there should have been an area in the exhibit hall where online computers were freely available for attendees to use, as is now becoming common at many similar conferences. And we think our chapter is just the group to work with PDK International, a computer company, and perhaps with Walden University to sponsor and facilitate this addition to next year's conference!
Andre and I both got really excited about this idea. What a great way to provide a service most Kappans would really welcome, while gaining visibility for our own chapter, reaching out to potential new members, and doing it all in a way that supports our chapter's recognition of the power internet communications should now have for all Kappans. We discussed this idea with several members of the International Board of Directors while still at the conference, and all welcomed the idea.
There could be costs involved in addition to travel costs, though our aim would be to solicit sponsorship for all the costs to minimize our chapter's investment. We will need to get started right away reaching out to potential sponsors if we are to bring this plan to reality.
